Citicoline, also known as Cytidine 5-diphosphocholine or CDP-Choline, is a molecule present in the body. It is physiologically used as a precursor in the endogenous synthesis of nerve cell membrane phospholipids. It represents the biological substrate necessary for the synthesis of acetylcholine and other neurotransmitters, fundamental for the propagation of nerve impulses.
Citicoline plays its biochemical-metabolic role by:
Stimulating the biosynthesis of cerebral phospholipids (Phosphatidylcholine, Phosphatidylserine, Phosphatidylethanolamine).
Increasing the synthesis of acetylcholine and other neurotransmitters due to increased bioavailability of choline at the neuronal level.
Improving cerebral microcirculatory hemodynamics and increasing cerebral plasma flow.
