TEST STRIPS
DescriptionSystem for self-monitoring of blood glucose.
The test strips must be used with BGStar, iBGStar, and MyStar family blood glucose meters for the quantitative determination of blood glucose in capillary whole blood.
The BGStar strip contains the enzyme glucose oxidase (GOx) with an oxidation-reduction chemical mediator that produces an electrochemical signal proportional to the glucose concentration in the blood sample. The blood glucose meter measures this signal, using dynamic electrochemistry to correct common analytical interferences, such as hematocrit.
Instructions for use
Verifying the performance of the test strips with the device using BGStar control solution:
BGStar control solution at normal and high concentrations contains a determined amount of glucose that reacts with BGStar test strips together with BGStar and iBGStar blood glucose meters or the MyStar family to ensure they work correctly together.
Control solution tests must be performed when:
- the device is used for the first time;
- it is suspected that the device or test strips are not working correctly;
- it is suspected that the test results are not accurate;
- the device has been dropped, damaged, or come into contact with liquids;
- you are advised to do so by your doctor.
If the control solution test results are not within the acceptable range printed on the BGStar test strip vial for the control solution in use (normal or high), repeat the test. One or more of the following factors may cause results outside the established range:
- expired or defective control solution;
- expired or defective test strip;
- error during test execution;
- diluted control solution;
- device malfunction;
- control solution test performed outside the system's operating temperature range of 10 °C to 40 °C;
- the control solution bottle is not shaken vigorously before use;
- the first drop of control solution is not discarded and the tip of the bottle is not cleaned.
If the device continues to give results outside the appropriate acceptable range printed on the BGStar test strip vial, the test strip and device may not be working correctly. In this case, do not use the system and contact the distributor.
Test procedure
To ensure accurate results, wash your hands with soap and water. Make sure there is no grease, oil, or lotion on the sampling area. Dry your hands thoroughly.
Remove the lancing device cap, insert a new lancet, and detach the lancet cap. Replace the lancing device cap if samples are taken from fingertips, set the penetration depth level, and cock the lever.
Insert a new test strip. Prick the fingertip, the palm of the hand (at the base of the thumb), or the forearm. Check the instrument's instruction manual for use to see if sampling from alternative areas is allowed.
When the instrument displays the blood drop symbol, bring the blood sample into contact with the end of the BGStar test strip.
When the blood glucose test result, complete with time and date, is displayed on the screen, the test is finished, and the result is saved in memory.
Remove the used test strip from the instrument and dispose of it properly. The instrument will turn off automatically.
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling the blood glucose meter, lancing device, and test strips.
Meaning of test results
- Results below 20 mg/dL: If the test result is below 20 mg/dL, a message indicating hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) will be displayed on the meter screen. Refer to the user manual for more details. It is advisable to perform another test immediately. If a result below 20 mg/dL is obtained again, follow the treatment plan recommended by your doctor, or contact them immediately.
- Results above 600 mg/dL: If the test result is above 600 mg/dL, a message indicating hyperglycemia (high blood glucose) will be displayed on the meter screen. Refer to the user manual for more details. It is advisable to perform another test immediately. If a result above 600 mg/dL is obtained again, follow your doctor's advice to treat the hyperglycemic condition. It may be advisable to check ketone body levels.
The normal fasting blood glucose range for a non-diabetic adult is 70-99 mg/dL.
Always consult your doctor for information on the acceptable ranges recommended for the patient.
Warnings
Keep test strips and the test strip vial out of the reach of children. Test strips can be dangerous if swallowed. The vial contains drying agents that could be dangerous if inhaled or ingested and could cause eye and skin irritation.
Test strips must be used only once. Do not reuse. Dispose of used test strips properly.
If a test strip does not absorb the blood sample, contact the distributor.
Carefully read the user manual provided with BGStar, iBGStar, or MyStar family meters before using BGStar test strips.
The blood glucose meter and lancing device must be used by only one patient. Do not share them with anyone, including family members. Do not use for multiple patients.
All parts of the system can potentially transmit infectious diseases, even if they are disinfected. Refer to the BGStar, iBGStar, and MyStar family meters user manual for instructions on disinfecting the instrument.
To ensure accurate results, wash hands and the sampling area with soap and warm water before testing. Dry thoroughly. Unclean hands and sampling areas can lead to inaccurate results. Make sure there is no grease, oil, or lotion on the sampling area.
Use lancets only once. Do not use a lancing device or lancet that has already been used by another person.
In the case of patients in shock or individuals in severe hypotensive conditions, the instrument may give inaccurate results. In the case of individuals in a hyperglycemic/hyperosmolar state, with or without ketosis, the instrument may give inaccurate results lower than the average. Critically ill patients should not undergo testing using a blood glucose meter.
Severe dehydration and excessive fluid loss can cause inaccurate results. If severe dehydration is suspected, consult your doctor immediately.
The instrument may give inaccurate results in patients undergoing oxygen therapy.
Results below 70 mg/dL may indicate reduced blood glucose levels (hypoglycemia). Results above 240 mg/dL may indicate elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia). It may be advisable to check ketone body levels.
If results below 70 mg/dL or above 240 mg/dL are obtained and there are no symptoms of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, repeat the test. If symptoms are present or results below 70 mg/dL or above 240 mg/dL continue to be obtained, follow the treatment plan recommended by your doctor or contact them immediately.
If symptoms are present that conflict with the blood glucose test results obtained by following all the instructions in the user manual provided with BGStar and iBGStar instruments or the MyStar family, follow your doctor's advice or contact them immediately.
Do not use expired or damaged test strips to avoid obtaining inaccurate results.
Handle BGStar test strips gently with clean, dry hands when removing them from the vial or inserting them into the instrument.
Store test strips only in their original vial; under no circumstances store them in another vial, another container, or outside the vial. Close the vial cap immediately and tightly after removing a test strip from the vial.
Do not bend, cut, or alter BGStar test strips.
Bring the sampling area end of the BGStar test strip into contact only with fresh capillary blood or control solution.
Storage
Store the BGStar test strip vial in a cool, dry place at a temperature between 8 °C and 30 °C. Use BGStar test strips only at a system operating temperature between 10 °C and 40 °C. Keep away from direct sunlight and heat.
