Description
Gyno-Canestest is a self-diagnostic test for use by women with abnormal vaginal symptoms as an aid in diagnosing the cause.
It helps diagnose common vaginal infections and select the correct treatment.

Vaginal infections are a widespread problem among women of all ages.
While some vaginal infections are accompanied by abnormal vaginal discharge, almost 50% do not present these symptoms.
The most common causes of vaginal infections are bacteria, yeasts, and trichomonas (they could also be due to a combination of such infectious agents).
Bacterial vaginosis, a vaginal infection caused by certain bacteria, is more common than thrush and trichomoniasis and is associated with milky white-grey (homogeneous) discharge and a fishy odor. It can cause complications, especially during pregnancy and childbirth, therefore it must be managed correctly.
Discharge caused by trichomoniasis is yellow-green, foamy, and is usually associated with bad odors, vulvar itching, and painful urination.
In both infections, the pH is elevated.
In contrast, vaginal pH in cases of thrush infection is generally normal.
The discharge is white, thick, and resembles fresh cheese (ricotta), with no unpleasant odors.
Thrush is associated with intense itching and burning in the vagina and vulvar area.
The normal pH of the vagina (pH is an indicator of acidity) can range from 3.5 to 4.5(1).
Bacterial vaginosis and trichomonas infections, as well as non-infectious causes (including estrogen deficiency, menopause or post-menopause) cause an increase in vaginal pH.
With a color change on the yellow tip of the swab, Gyno-Canestest indicates whether the pH of the vaginal secretions is normal or elevated.
A positive test (color change to blue/green) indicates an elevated vaginal pH level.
A negative test (no color change) indicates a normal vaginal pH.
The results are based on an indication of the pH level and have been shown to be useful in detecting, with an accuracy greater than 90%*, any variation in vaginal pH, even in the presence of various levels of watery secretions.

Instructions for use
1. Unpack the single Gyno-Canestest (swab).
2. Ensure that the tip of the swab does not come into contact with any object before inserting it into the entrance of the vagina.
3. Hold Gyno-Canestest with your fingers on the swab handle.
4. Separate the labia to expose the vagina.
5. Gently insert the yellow tip of Gyno-Canestest until your fingers reach the outer skin of the vagina (approximately 5 cm into the vagina) and rotate the swab several times. Do not touch the entrance of the vagina.
6. Remove Gyno-Canestest from the vagina. Carefully avoid the tip coming into contact with any object and check that it has collected a visible amount of secretions.
An insufficient amount of secretion on the test can cause a false negative result.
7. Wait 10 seconds. Check the tip of Gyno-Canestest for any color changes from yellow to blue or green. Results should be read 10 seconds after collecting the secretion. A positive result will be stable for up to 30 minutes.
Caution: if blood spots appear on Gyno-Canestest, disregard the results and consult a doctor.
8. Dispose of Gyno-Canestest after use as with any other feminine hygiene product after checking the results. Do not flush it down the toilet.

Reading the results
Color change to blue or green (positive result):
if after 10 seconds the tip turns blue or green, this indicates that the vaginal pH has increased. If you are also experiencing the following symptoms:
- milky white-grey (homogeneous) discharge with a fishy odor may indicate a bacterial vaginosis infection.
- yellow-green and foamy discharge associated with bad odors and painful urination may indicate a trichomoniasis infection.
A partial blue or green mark on the yellow indicator on the tip of the swab should be considered a positive result. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
For example, if the tip turns blue or green but the associated symptoms described in the table are not present, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
No color change/swab remains yellow (negative result):
if after 10 seconds the tip does not turn blue or green, this indicates that the vaginal pH is normal. The likelihood of having a bacterial or trichomonas infection is low. If you are experiencing the following symptoms:
- white, thick, fresh cheese-like (ricotta) discharge without unpleasant odors may indicate a vaginal yeast infection, known as candidiasis.

Warnings
1. To ensure the validity of the results, do not perform Gyno-Canestest under any of the following circumstances: (a) less than one day before menstruation or it is the day of menstruation; (b) there are signs of menstruation or vaginal bleeding; (c) less than 12 hours have passed since sexual intercourse or vaginal douching.
All the above conditions can cause false positive results.
2. Do not insert the swab deeper than the handling point.
3. If pregnant, consult your doctor before use, as interpreting test results during pregnancy requires professional knowledge.
4. Some menopausal and post-menopausal women may have an elevated vaginal pH and the test may give a green/blue result even if they are not suffering from bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. Therefore, this test should not be used if you are menopausal or post-menopausal.

Storage
Store in a dry place at room temperature.
Check the expiry date on the packaging of the individual test.
Keep the Gyno-Canestest individually wrapped in sealed foil and use immediately after opening.
