FOLAMET

Description
Food for special medical purposes (FSMP) indicated for the dietary management of hyperhomocysteinemia resulting from a genetic deficiency of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme, also known as folic acid genetic polymorphism. L-5-methylfolate is the metabolically active form of folic acid and, through the transfer of a methyl group, is capable of converting homocysteine back into methionine even in the presence of the genetic deficiency. Vitamins B2, B6, B12 and zinc are enzymatic cofactors that enhance the activity of L-5-methylfolate in controlling Hyperhomocysteinemia.
Levo-5-methylfolate or methylfolate (6S-5-Methyl-THF or MTHF) is the biologically active form of folate, is naturally present in our body and accounts for 98% of plasma folates. Bioavailability studies have shown that methylfolate supplementation is effective in improving folate levels in both plasma and red blood cells. Methylfolate does not need to be biotransformed by either the dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) enzyme or the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme. Therefore, the bioavailability of Methylfolate is not limited by the saturation of these enzymes and its intake does not lead to the presence of unmetabolized forms of folate in the blood. Methylfolate is therefore not affected by functional polymorphisms of the MTHFR and DHFT genes. Methylfolate has a lower risk of interaction with DHFR inhibiting drugs (e.g. methotrexate), and is less likely to mask the hematological symptoms resulting from vitamin B12 deficiency in patients with pernicious anemia. Furthermore, methylfolate is stable to exposure to visible light and UV radiation. Therefore, under conditions of exposure to sunlight, supplementation with methylfolate ensures a stability of blood folate levels that cannot be guaranteed by other types of folate. In conclusion, methylfolate is able to correct Hyperhomocysteinemia even in the presence of genetic mutations and enzymatic polymorphisms related to folate metabolism.
